Archer Carbide Saw Chain – .325″ Pitch

Archer carbide saw chain is made for timber carrying dirt, sand and other abrasive surface contamination that can quickly dull conventional steel chain. It is well suited to applications such as ground-stored firewood, dirty bark, termite-affected logs and stump timber.

Each semi-chisel cutter features a wide, full-coverage laminated tungsten-carbide cap brazed to the steel cutter body, providing strong resistance to abrasive wear and longer cutting intervals between machine sharpenings in suitable conditions.

This chain is designed for contaminated timber where conventional steel chain can lose its edge quickly. For exceptionally dense Australian hardwoods, please review the application suitability information below before ordering.
Carbide vs Conventional Steel

Carbide and conventional steel chains suit different cutting conditions. The better choice depends on timber condition, required cutting speed and access to sharpening equipment.

Archer Carbide Chain

Best suited to timber carrying dirt, sand, termite grit or other abrasive contamination that quickly dulls conventional steel chain. Its main advantage is longer cutting intervals between machine sharpenings.

Conventional Steel Chain

Generally preferred for clean timber where maximum cutting speed and straightforward sharpening are the priorities.

Construction & Manufacturing

According to Archer’s manufacturer information, the chain chassis is produced from high-quality nickel-alloy Japanese steel, with shot peening used to strengthen the steel components.

Each chain is factory sharpened using an automated precision process to provide consistent cutter angles and cutting performance from first use.

Setup, Lubrication & Run-In

Before fitting, fully submerge or soak the new chain in quality bar-and-chain oil so lubricant reaches the rivets, drive links and moving surfaces.

Use tacky bar-and-chain oil rated at a minimum of ISO VG 150. Where the chainsaw has an adjustable oil pump, set it to maximum flow and confirm oil is reaching the bar and chain before cutting.

First Half Tank of Fuel

  • Check chain tension frequently, particularly after the first few cuts.
  • Allow the chain to cool before making final tension adjustments.
  • Keep the drive links seated in the bar groove while allowing the chain to move freely by hand.
  • Inspect every cutter for chipping, cracking, movement or separation of the carbide cap.
Inspect before continuing to cut. If any cutter is chipped, cracked, loose or missing, remove the chain from service.
Sharpening & Maintenance

Inspect the complete chain after every tank of fuel. When cutting dirty bark, termite sand, soil-contaminated timber or stumps, inspect at each refuel and sharpen after every tank, or sooner if cutting performance declines.

Grinding equipment Use a suitable diamond grinding disc only. Conventional steel-chain grinding wheels are not suitable.
Grinding method Use light, controlled passes and avoid overheating the carbide cap or brazed joint.
Depth gauges Maintain at .025″ (approximately 0.65 mm). Do not lower them further to increase cutting speed.
Bar oil Use quality tacky bar-and-chain oil rated at a minimum of ISO VG 150.

Archer carbide chain is intended to cut timber carrying abrasive surface contamination rather than direct contact with soil, stone, concrete, nails, wire, bullets or other foreign material.

Keeping the chain sharp reduces heat, stretch and cutter loading. If cutting speed falls, additional pressure is required, the chain becomes unusually hot or tension repeatedly loosens, stop and inspect the chain before continuing.

Application Suitability – Dense Australian Hardwoods

This guidance applies particularly to Ironbark species, Gidgee, Buloke, Box species, Jarrah, Red Gum and timbers of similar hardness or density.

Based on our testing, Archer carbide chain is not recommended for cutting exceptionally dense Australian hardwoods. In this application, we found the wide carbide cutter more susceptible to chipping or shearing under high cutting load and vibration.

For these timbers, choose a chain better suited to the cutting load and vibration involved. Where carbide chain is required, a narrower carbide cutter with vibration-reducing features is the more suitable option.
